Don’t forget new brake pads. Also pull the headset, crank, and wheel bearings. If they don’t need replacement, give them some fresh grease and tighten them properly. Some people buy loose bearings and get rid of the cages. More bearings means more surface area means smoother roll. This is a great opportunity to purchase some new tools if you don’t have them. Headset wrenches and a crank puller are good places to start.

You can probably reuse the freewheel. The front chainrings are probably welded or riveted onto the crank, so there’s little chance of replacing those. The freewheel may also need a bearing check since they weren’t sealed. That will require a freewheel tool to remove. You can make your own with a board, a nail, and a short length of bicycle chain.

The chain will probably need to be replaced. The walmart version is fine since it’s not likely this bike will see a lot of miles.

Spend a few minutes checking the spoke tension. Properly tensioned wheels are less likely to warp. While you are replacing the tires, also replace the spoke tape. The rims are probably single-walled, so the tape is necessary to keep the spoke heads from poking holes in the tube. I’ve seen people use electrical tape, but I don’t recommend this. The heat from braking can soften the adhesive and the tape will shift, exposing the spokes, causing a flat.

Good luck finding tires at a local shop. I’d recommend shopping at Nashbar .
